The James Andrews School of Golf

Golf School

As we reported in September, the ground-breaking James Andrews School of Golf brings American teaching and coaching techniques to England. The recipe is proving to be very successful, word is spreading fast and bookings are pouring in for 2001. So come on, if this country’s going to produce some spectacular home grown talent for the future, we need more dedicated golf schools like this one. We must concentrate on good tuition at all levels, especially the youngsters who will carry the flag for future generations.

The secret of the school’s success is the intensive residential tuition, giving you the time to learn, practice and play. Small groups of no more than 4 are taught by the team of PGA professionals covering all aspects for the game. An important part of the teaching programme is the Digital Analysis Centre where two video cameras record your swing from behind and from the side. These images are then downloaded onto the computer, enabling the coach to highlight specific areas for improvement. One of the most exciting features about the system is that you can compare your swing with any major star when his image is placed next to yours on the screen. Quite a shock, but once you can actually see the faults, you can start to build a good basic swing. It’s definitely useful in picking up the differences between a good swing and your own, even if you thought your swing was pretty good, just wait until you see yourself alongside Tiger Woods.

The system provides a clear and precise image in slow motion, pause or at normal speed. The system is so accurate, that the coaches can calculate the degree of wrist bend, club head speed and angle of attack to impact and even plot your swing plane on the back swing compared to the downswing. Seeing is believing, warns James, and it’s definitely fascinating to see your own swing dissected in this way.

The all-weather floodlit and indoor facilities enable teaching all-year-round and the school offers an exceptionally high standard of coaching. We were very much treated as individuals and enjoyed the personalised practice routines and work programmes.

Based at Sedlescombe Golf Course in East Sussex, the 18-hole course (par 72) is ideal for teaching, while the lakes and other natural hazards provide a challenge for the experienced golfer. The course itself is set in gloriously unspoiled 1066 country, so there’s plenty to do and places to visit in the surrounding area. You could even bring the family.

We felt thoroughly spoiled at the Golf Lodge, which is quietly luxurious, with beautiful air-conditioned rooms and exceptionally comfortable beds. There is a choice of Twin, Double, Luxury and Family rooms. Most rooms have wonderful views across the golf course, with balconies for the luxury rooms.

Greens, the clubhouse restaurant, has a terrific atmosphere and great food. A perfect place to unwind after a day on the course. It’s relaxed and fun and reminds one of what golf school should be about!
